Why is there a Points system on freedly?

After looking on the forum earlier I came across the question "How can I answer the questions on here?"
After thinking about it for a while I was struggling to come up with a reason why there is a points system on here. However I do find this interesting and useful as it will attract more people to the forum and will bring them back onto the forum so they can answer or ask questions on this forum, With me wanting to look at a career in IT I find this forum interesting and helpful. Back to the point why is there a points system on this forum and does it help with people coming back onto the forum?

There are two reasons why people contribute to the Freedly forum, and I am working on the registration system to make this clearer. Freedly is mainly for people who want to build expertise. That expertise gives you the power of knowledge to help overcome any problems you have. With that power, you can earn more money, be a better student, manage an illness, or escape any problems that restrain you. That is why I emphasize freedom so often.
Freedly is also for people who just have a question they need to get answered, or an opinion or experience they want to share. For these people, the points system is not very relevant.
For people who are here to build expertise, the points system measures their progress, and opens doors to more features. All will become clear later this month, when the I announce the full details of the Freedly expertise program prior to the official launch in March.
